In a little over five weeks my kitchen went from a 1960’s Mickey D’s color themed hell to a lovely, modern, functional room. Here are some pictures of the finished product. I still have a couple of projects to complete-like stripping and staining the door to the laundry room and putting the transitions from the kitchen to dining room floors down. However, I’ve got company coming on Friday and the rest of my house is a straight disaster, so stripping and transitioning will have to wait. Without further ado (and backed by the soothing sounds of my children screaming for me and a happening electronic Bossa Nova…
That hole back there where you can see all the crap I have to put in the garage sitting on the washer is where the laundry room door will go.
Those tall doors are responsible for three IKEA trips all by themselves.
The room beyond with the globe is the playroom. Now I can wash wineglasses in my huge-ass sink and watch my kids jam on their keyboard at the same time. Also, that calendar says July.
Never be afraid to paint your walls neon orange and accessorize with Julia Child and your granny’s old mandolin.
I have no idea why my husband is in charge of taking all the family photos. Don’t you think my lighting composition in this one is moody with just a touch of danger? Oh, it’s just dark and blurry, you say? Whatevs.
I only have to lose 20 more lbs. and then I can bathe in this sink!
I would like you to be impressed that I picked out the cabinets, countertops, and backsplash all on different occasions. Yes, I realize brown and beige and gray all match each other, but is pretty no?
There you have it! I would like to thank Job and Johnny from scottsavoie for all the great work they did. My house is old and weird and it was not an easy job, I know.
I had a lot of profound things to talk about this Labor Day with regards to working for myself, but I can’t remember what any of them were. My kids have been playing “Just the Way You Are” over and over on their keyboard and trying out every single one of the 100 sound effects available to them. (Bossa Nova, wiggity wack, wah wah, just the way you are!!)
So, what are you doing today? Barbeques? No Reservations marathon? I’m going to buy a new door to go between the kitchen and the laundry room and then get back to putting stuff away. I have very little left to do, but what I do have is such a bummer. There’s a massive paper sack holding the contents of THE JUNK DRAWER(S) waiting for me. Boo. I would love to just chuck the whole thing, but the you never know factor is a bitch. Plus, the hubs is already pissed about the amount of stuff I dropped off at the Goodwill . I told him yesterday that only one of us was allowed to be a hoarder and it wasn’t me. Somehow that didn’t lessen the anger he felt at my having given away four bar stools. Ack. (They were mismatched, too tall for our current configuration, and 11 years old.) At any rate, that’s what I’m doing today. Expect an epic kitchen porn post tomorrow!
Tonight I’ve got a lot of reading to do. I’m a little over halfway done with Jess C Scott’s The intern. I’m really enjoying it, but a bit tied down by having to read it on my computer, otherwise I would have finished it by now. It’s about lust and hip hop and no I’m not averse to either. 🙂 I”m also beta reading for V.J. Chambers and am chomping at the bit to get into it. So far September has been even busier than I thought it was going to be, what with the kitchen and all the reading and writing I’ve got to do. I love it!
All right, enough dilly dallying. I’m off to buy a door. I do hope you’ve got something slightly more exciting planned!
I stayed up way too late reading Mockingjay and my back hurts so bad I am about to hypochondriacally claim I have spinal meningitis, so enjoy the pretty pictures of my kitchen remodel.
When last we saw the kitchen it looked like this:
After the cabinets were installed.
The beautiful floor-it is the color of concrete, which is what the floor underneath this is, but the new floor has the benefit of never having been jackhammered!
Some door front action. (Note: these door fronts are discontinued because that is the kind of luck I have, so don’t like them too much, they cause great heartache-okay, as much as drawer fronts and 700 trips to IKEA can.)
This is a random picture of my daughter.
It’s all comin’ together! I’m thinking of painting that red wall a nice cinnamon or tangerine color. What do you think? Keep in mind the rooms right next to that are lime green and a kind of 50’s grey-blue. Oh, and my house is orange on the outside.
This is how it looks right now. The contractors are on vacation for a week, so it will most likely be done next week. Can’t wait for the plumbing to be hooked up! So sick of washing the dishes in the bathroom. For reals.
